CAPOEIRA PUNE

Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art developed by African slaves in Brazil as a form of expression and retaliation against slavery in the 16th century. Through acrobatic and fluid movements, kicks, music, camaraderie and axé (good energy), capoeira distinguishes itself from other martial arts. The roda (circle) is where capoeira is played to music, led by the capoeira instruments: berimbau, pandeiro, and atabaque. Capoeiristas play capoeira, as opposed to fight; having a conversation with their bodies through various kicks, escapes, and movements. It proves a unique opportunity for its practitioners to learn a new language, sing, exercise their body mind and spirit.

Capoeira in Mumbai with Mestre Chicote and students

Four of us headed to Mumbai on Wednesday to spend the day and train with Mestre Chicote and Sucuri from Cordao de Ouro. After the early train journey, we reached Bandra by local train, and met with both of them for breakfast. We got excited when we were asked if we would like to go visit their project at Baiganwadi and help paint their classroom.
We spent the afternoon, painting, playing and joking around with the amazing kids. We were blown away by their energy and their capoeira skills. We ended up having a roda with them, and it was super fun. The energy was simply awesome!
We then went for the evening class. We started with a light warm-up and stretches and proceeded to movements, first individually, and then combining them and applying them two-by-two. We ended the class with a Roda. We got some good personal pointers by Mestre Chicote to improve our flexibility and skill set. Really good class!
After a few glasses of sugar cane juice, we went to Sucuri and Chico's house to hang for a bit. Their home has always been our home away from home in Mumbai.

Mestre Chicote said he hoped to come back to India in March 2014, and we hope he can make it to Pune next time.

In any case, we hope to go back to Mumbai regularly and hope that Sucuri, his students and the kids from Baiganwadi do come to Pune often too!
